Only Today

by Billy Creighton © 2020

The sun began to force its rays
Down from a clear blue sky
The routine of another day
Began like cloudless days gone bye

No thoughts which held a thing to dread
No storm upon the shore
No wind disturbs the flowers head
No new prayer to implore

Another day of grace is given
A gift from Almighty's hand
This day forgotten as God-given
Tomorrow's gift already planned

Amidst a carefree careless mind
The thunder of the cannon roared
The lightning flashed across the sky
The surgeon cut as with a sword

A lesson I must swiftly learn
No day is guaranteed
Each day is given to embrace
To touch and taste and see

To thank my God upon my knees
As each new day begins
And seek to live at one with him
Whatever this day brings
