The Silence

by Joy Wieters

Kids are scattered across the lawn,
"We're having quiet time," they say.
Quiet, indeed it is, except for
One girl loudly rockin next to me.

Though we are quiet with our mouths
Are we quiet with our hearts?
Are we willing to drop whatever we're doing,
To take the time to start?

Finding God in California,
Finding also me,
Finding out who God has made us,
And who I'll someday be.

Do not break the silence,
You can hear it in your ears.
Can you hear it in your heart,
Or can you start to hear?

I have one hour to talk to God,
To say what's on my heart.
To speak and listen to the word,
And know how great Thou art.

I may get a sunburn now,
It's hot here in the sun.
Soon the silence will be broken,
When this time is done.

But will the quiet rest inside,
A plea upon your life?
I plead that You would come with power,
Lord God, silence drowns out the strife.
