Well Gone Dry?

by Patricia Joan Polhans

I'd like to write more poems
I'd surely give it a try.
But my mind is like a well
That has totally gone dry.

It's hungry and it's thirsty
To drink in a poet's rhyme
I'm trying with all my my might
But words 're fleeing me this time.

I guess I must dig deeper
Into this reservoir of mine.
So the words will burst forth
Into oceans of poetry lines.

I'll hope for springs of water,
Oceans...if dug deep enough
So that my mind 'll replenish
Vocabulary enough!

Like a fount that pours forth water
I will dig much deeper, still,
To find the waters of refreshing
To flood my mind and will.

May even have to kneel and pray
To God and take my stand
In hopes that he'll replenish
This barren, dry, parched land.

Sometimes I'll even have to wait
For the well to 'gin its fill.
So here I am, still waiting,
To be filled up to the gills!
