Pearl of Great Price

by Patricia Joan Polhans

I have no precious gift to give
None designed for a noble king,
Not a voice to serenade him
For I have no voice to sing.

I have no special talent
That I could perform for him
Just tattered worn out rags
That I have been dressed in.

I have no musical abilities
To play before his throne
I don't even have a friend
For I've walked my days alone.

I've searched thru' my belongings
But none are good enough
To present to a noble king
All I have is broken, tattered stuff.

My clothes are torn and tattered,
My countenance very poor
As others look upon me
They turn their heads 'n' just ignore.

But I must go before the king
Before the 'Great Magistrate'
But I can't find a special gift
To bring to his Golden Gates.

I have nothing to offer him
But anxiety, pain and scars
And within my broken body
Wounds that've left me marred.

What if he doesn't want me?
What if he turns me aside?
This could be my only chance
To be at the Great King's side!

Now I stand before the throne
With many, many others
Moms, dads, aunts and uncles
And many sisters and brothers.

The king is now approaching
As I hang my head in shame
I feel so very embarrassed
I hope he doesn't know my name.

For only the most precious jewels
Are selected by the Great King,
Those adorned in fine linens
And wearing gold signet rings.

My heart started to race as
The King began to speak
With a smile upon his face he said
You're the one that I seek.

I could hardly believe my ears!
That the King had chosen me!
He said, "Come to me my child
Please come, I've room for thee."

My heart was filled with exubrence
The tears rolled down my cheeks
"My child, please come to me
And sit down at your King's feet."

He dressed me in fine new linen
Gave me a robe of spark'ling white
Sat a gold crown upon my head
Each jewel placed with great delight.

He showed how much he loved me
Though it was a shocking surprise
He said that I was his anointed,
His precious pearl of great price!
