A Vision of St. Giles?

by John Thorne © 2018

Whilst I drove home from Axminster one sunny summers day
I saw a lonely traveller with stave and beard of grey
He seemed to have an aura which I couldn't overlook
And as I passed I had to take a further fleeting look

My wife and I went walking together with our dog
And in a Shute Woods clearing laid my traveller by a log
With surprise, whilst he was reading, we bid him a good day
We then continued, passed him by, and went along our way

Then in the trees in sunlight a golden hind stood there
Majestic, still, with little fear it just returned our stare
St. Giles we thought immediately, was that him resting there?
He is our Church's patron saint a model for God's care

St. Giles was a hermit who lived with his pet hind
His devotion and compassion an example for mankind
We struggle to find if the past is relevant today
But goodness and service doesn't change from day to day

Was this a vision sent from God, requesting us to serve?
Already God's great faithfulness is more than we deserve
St. Giles worked with cripples and children racked with fear
And his vision will encourage us to do God's work each year
