A Gift

by Rob Dilworth © 2016

As you peruse this rhyming script
And sail its rhythmic flow;
You’ll see, by grace, I was equipped;
A fact I wish to show.

I wasn’t blessed with fluent speech;
I stutter, stammer, pause.
Coherent words are out of reach.
It’s one of many flaws.

My words come out a jumbled mess.
Their meaning isn’t clear.
I think at times it might be stress,
An awkward social fear.

Or maybe I’ve connections loose
From frontal lobe to mouth.
I try so hard but it’s no use,
My words have headed south.

But then one day I said a prayer,
Alone on bended knees.
For I was lost in deep despair,
I begged him, “Help me please!”

“Why can’t I show what’s deep in me,
These feelings or my thought?
Please help me speak so all will see;
Use words the way I ought.”

Of course, my broken words were odd
But Jesus didn’t care,
For I had cast my care on God
And now it’s his to bear.

My prayer was answered in a way
I would have never planned.
He didn’t change the words I say
But now I understand.

It isn’t spoken words that I’m
So blessed to share with you,
But written words with simple rhyme
My God is speaking through.

So not long after pleading there,
For better or for worse,
I thought it would be good to share;
Express myself in verse.

It took about a month before
I saw the answer’s glare;
These simple poems speak of more,
His answer to my prayer.

So if you think I have a skill,
You need to catch my drift.
Each word I write is by his will,
Not talent, but a gift.
