Word!

It's been said in the scriptures, that man does not live
by the bread he has eaten alone,
but he lives by each word God has chosen to give --
from his mouth every word he's made known.

I commend you to God and the word of his grace,
which can build up and keep in your heart
an inheritance given for you to embrace
with the people who he's set apart.

Through the Word we're prepared, altogether complete,
and we're fully equipped for the strife.
As the Spirit gives life, so the flesh brings defeat;
I speak words full of Spirit and life.

By his will, in his goodness, God fashioned our birth,
through his own word of truth we were made;
that we might be a kind of firstfruits of his earth,
and his pride of creation, arrayed.

I have treasured the words from his mouth more than food,
his commands over bread have I craved.
Like a baby, pure spiritual milk I've pursued
so that I might grow up and be saved.

Every scripture is God-breathed, from heaven above
used to teach us and bring things to light;
it rebukes us, refutes us, corrects us in love,
and it trains us to know wrong from right.

Every word of the law that I've read I believe,
with the writings the Prophets impart.
So, I cast off my filth and I humbly receive
your own word to take root in my heart.

Those who study the perfect law -- they have been freed
and continue to follow their quest;
they remember what's heard, they are doers indeed,
and in doing their deed they are blessed.

How I cherish your words on my mind all day long,
just like David, boy shepherd of herds,
and a man of God's heart who wrote praises in song;
I am wiser, enriched by your words.

One who listens to God and then does what's been heard --
it's like building a house on a rock.
His disciples we'll be if we live by his word;
truth is freedom -- but we must walk the talk!
