The Stones We Throw

by Clinton Herring © 2021

"Teacher, we caught her in adultery."
They condemned her for sins they see.
"The Law commands that we stone her."
Their inner blindness a complete blur.

"I see Jesus standing by God!"
"Cover your ears, this man's a fraud!"
They dragged him out and hurled stones.
Their darkened hearts were deadly bones.

We all throw 'stones' - the words we hurl.
The pain they cause is just as cruel.
These callous words we often speak,
are death to spirit and the weak.

Our hurtful words are 'stones' for sure
that others must forever endure.
Striking targets, we score with glee(!) -
a knife in back or blow from the knee.

Each word has the power of life or death.
How thoughtless we use such 'stones' of breath.
Take heed your words before you speak.
Shun words that slap another's cheek.

These reckless 'stones' we often throw
are sins against God that we thoughtlessly sow.
Our words should give life and build others up,
Not pour out our wrath, the wrath in our cup.

The Lord spoke kindness, giving grace to all,
His heart's to give life to all from the fall.
He's the example that we must follow.
Words that will hurt are worthless and shallow.

So rise and speak words of kindness and love.
Words of the Spirit with life from above.

Matthew 12:34 can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things [words]: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

Matthew 25:40b
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of have done it unto me.

Galatians 6:7
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

James 1:19-20
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

James 2:13
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy.

James 3:6
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell
