More or Less

by John Janzen © 2021

If I should gauge my service to
The Lord who made my life brand new
By way of simple service test
My answers would be more or less

Do I depend upon the Lord
For things I need, but can't afford?
Do I still praise when funds are tight
And worries threaten through the night?

When pressed upon from every side
Do I in Jesus' grace confide?
Would that which issues from my tongue
Be fitting for a song if sung?

I'd like to think that more or less
Somehow I'd manage through the test
Extending mercy here and there
With heaps of grace spread everywhere

Does my abundant use of grace
Or mercy scattered round keep pace
When it's applied to others who
Do things to me they shouldn't do?

Do I excuse a sideways glance
Forgive, forget at every chance?
Am I prepared when criticized
To love the one for whom Christ died?

And so the tally might reveal
Both what is hoped and what is real
The fool will say let's hope for best
With less of more and more of less

The Holy Ghost's indwelling power
Is what we need for every hour
When Christ is more and we are less
In God our Father we find rest

Matthew 12:34
...how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things [words]: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

Matthew 25:40b
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these...ye have done it unto me.

Galatians 6:7
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

James 1:19-20
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

James 2:13
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy.

James 3:6
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell
