Sharing Shepherds

by John Janzen © 2018

In reverence the night beheld
The enigmatic view
Angelic hosts proclaimed aloud
What God already knew

The shepherds bristled at the sound
As spirit choirs descend
These messengers from God expound
His gracious plan t’ward men

This motley crew amid the flocks
Perplexed, could scarce believe
The gospel of the Saviour’s birth
The world should now receive

With hurried step and joyful heart
To Bethlehem they went
And laid their eyes on Jesus Christ
The son of heaven sent

But who will hark to hear the tale
Of keepers from the field?
For shepherds are the baser sort
Their disrepute is sealed

But share they must both near and far
For who could such refuse?
Instructions were to tell abroad
Not make believe the news

Thus with resolve they met the task
To spread the tidings round
the Saviour of the world is born
the world it’s hope has found

Just like these shepherds, we today
Must carry the good news
To those who warmly welcome it
those also who refuse

Those sharing shepherds long ago
Have gone and set the pace
Let us not fall one step behind
Who also run the race
