The Wounds of Freedom

by Dave Mudford © 2024

Airmen committed to the cause
battling foes amidst bleak stars,
brave to the call of nation's plea
across far lands and distant sea;
innocence lost
at greatest cost,
searching blue skies for freedom's key.

Amongst the wispy clouds of beauty
courage blooms alive through their duty,
life surrendered in the heavens
cruel shadow of mankind's weapons;
wounded flight
honor sight,
protection of justice beckons.

Loved one's grief greets the early dawn
look to the sky with hope's forlorn,
father's and son's beneath the ground
graves of the fallen now are found;
mourning's sad breath
confronting death,
price of war, may we heed its sound.

Remember them in thought and deed
honor give, in how we proceed,
respecting the life that they lay down
the value of peace we daily crown;
dismiss the fight
regain true sight,
our pride's wrath in our sacrifice drown…

A scarlet hue now stains the earth
from blood that flowed to give new birth,
freedom's dance now for all to claim
amazing grace through Jesus name;
rejoice and sing
all praises bring,
on bended knee let His love reign!

Note: This has been written in memory of the Australian and New Zealander Airmen who fought in World War 2. Many of the them gave the ultimate sacrifice.
