King David

by Tracy A Andrews © 2022

Young David was chosen of God to be the future King,
The training he was given was to play the lyre and sing.
He had been his father's shepherd, looking after the sheep,
By killing lions and bears, in safety he did, them, keep.

David killed Goliath and he came to live with the King,
King Saul promised the victor wealth and to wear his daughter's ring.
David joins the army and gives Israel great success,
King Saul's jealous as the people start to think of him less.

Jonathon treasures David with the love of brotherhood,
King Saul despises David, why, he never understood.
God is on David's side, he outsmarts Saul at every turn,
He won't hurt the Lord's anointed as friendship he did yearn.

With patience and courage, David becomes King before long,
He loved God deeply, which made him, in battle, brave and strong.
David wasn't without his faults but he did try his best,
So, if our hearts are full of love, then we, too, will be blessed.
