SPARKLING RED

by Billy Creighton © 2018

SPARKLING RED
I wake in the mornings to the feeling of woe
And my hearts full of sorrow but why I don’t know
Each day is filled in my miserable life
With fears unknown, with battles and strife
My body aches for my bruises are real
O’h where do they come from my memory is frail
When I look in the mirror there is no disguise
From the look of death in my bloodshot eyes

Yet I read from the sacred archives of time
The dangers of lingering over the wine
But when I gaze into that sparkling red cup
It goes down smoothly, long before I sup!

In the end I know how it bites like a snake
And my eyes see things which make my body quake
My mind is distorted with all things confusing
And my fight with sanity I feel like I’m losing
Like one who’s atop of the rig in high seas
And the waves are beating me to my knees
And I know in my body that I should feel pain
But my numbness only adds to my tangled brain

Yet I read from the sacred archives of time
The dangers of lingering over the wine
But when I gaze into that sparkling red cup
It goes down smoothly, long before I sup!

How often I cry will this nightmare be ore
And the gentle breeze carries me to the shore
But I wake in the morning and the first thing I think
O’h where O’h where can I find me a drink
O’h where will I find strength for my weakness
Who will save me from this body of death
Will I always be the sparkling reds slave
Until it carries me to my grave

Oh no! For I read in these archives of time
How the victory Christ won on the cross is all mine
For He died for my sin and to set me free
From the sparkling red cup which He conquered for me.
