Civil Eyes

by Jeff Bidiman

Behold bright city on a hill,
All you who carry Jesus' name,
Look upon your neighbor's hardship;
Remember you were once the same.

Your streets were stained by blood and hate
And fear and worry ruled the night,
But Christ knelt down to wash your feet
And turned that darkness into light.

The Lord revealed His heart to you
And taught you how to live as one;
To nail your idols to your cross
And follow Father's only Son.

Yes you endured such painful days
To see God free you from those chains,
So be like Christ, whose life is love,
Who sacrificed to cleanse our stains.

Oh city of a royal priesthood,
God's Word reveals how we must live
To love our neighbors as ourselves
With hands to serve and hearts to give.
