The Borrowed Gift

by Kathleen Higham

A saying that we all know
Here today and gone tomorrow
Oh I have lived this saying
The gift was here to borrow.

So, borrow means not permanent
Learning this lesson one day
The borrowed gift left my side
Just simply walked away.

Have you ever lost someone?
Not knowing the reason why
Here today and gone tomorrow
The mere thought brings a sigh.

I have surely burdened my mind
Wanting so to "get over it"
Each morning upon awakening
The desire comes to quit.

My God kept me by His side
When I took a quiet walk
Having grieved my husband of this
He gave me his wisdom talk.

The conversation felt empty
Because men never understand
Women can be so emotional
But God intervened as planned.

He brought another borrowed one
On my shoulder she would land
The most delicate butterfly
Fluttering wings graced my hand.

She was absolutely stunning
But of course she flitted away
The borrowed gift so lovely
How I wished she would stay.

Loved ones so like that butterfly
When they slipped away from me
Here today and gone tomorrow
Maybe it was not meant to be.

A saying that we all know
"That is just the way life goes"
I long to see them once again
But the answer, only God knows.
