Charlie, The Drummer Boy

by Margaret Cagle

Charlie wanted to join the army,
But he was not quite old enough,
So he enlisted as a drummer boy.
The Civil War battles were tough.

While at the Battle of Gettysburg,
Charlie suffered grave bodily harm.
His severe wounds then required
Amputation of a leg and an arm.

Charlie was saved at nine-years old,
And he told his Jewish doctor that.
The doctor then called his chaplain.
At his bedside, the chaplain sat.

"You may not die," said the chaplain,
"But if the Lord does call you away,
Is there anything you want me to do,
Or something you want me to say?"

"I'll give you my mother's address,
So you can write her a letter,
And please send to her my Bible
If I should die and get no better."

Charlie told his Jewish doctor,
"Doctor, always remember I love you.
I love every Jew, dear doctor.
Jesus, my best Friend was a Jew."

"Doctor, I pray my God will save you."
"Yes, I see" is all the doctor said.
He didn't get saved, though he listened.
In just five days, Charlie was dead.

The doctor never forgot Charlie.
In years, he came to Jesus, the Light.
While he attended a Gospel meeting,
He heard a lady's testimony one night.

"Folks, I want to testify for Jesus.
It may be the last time that I do.
I'm sick; I'm going to Heaven soon.
My boy Charlie, he is there too."

"He was just a little drummer boy.
He was wounded in a battle too.
His chaplain sent me his Bible.
Charlie prayed for his doctor, a Jew."

After she finished, the doctor stood.
"I'm that doctor; Sister, Jesus cares!
Charlie's Savior is now my Savior.
God answered your dear son's prayers."
