Mom's Long Dresses

by Margaret Cagle

Sue's mom wore long dresses.
Sue really did not seem to mind.
She actually had never seen her
When she wore any other kind.

As Sue grew a little older,
And made many friends as a teen,
They questioned Sue about Mom.
They weren't trying to be mean.

"Why do you wear long dresses?"
Sue asked her mom one day.
"Well Dear, I guess it is time
To tell you the story if I may."

"When you were just a baby
Upstairs in your crib asleep,
Our house quickly caught on fire.
Into those flames, I took a leap."

"I had to save my baby girl,
And there was no other way.
I had to run through the fire
To save you that fateful day."

Then Mom lifted her long skirt,
Revealing scars, ugly and red.
"Oh Mom! You did it for me!
You risked your life!" Sue said.

"Mom, I love you so very much!
I am proud to be your girl!
And Mom, I really think your legs
Are the prettiest in the world!"

"Like Jesus, you sacrificed,
And you did it just for me!"
"Sue, I only scarred my legs.
Jesus gave His all, you see!"

"Jesus shed His life's blood.
On a cross, His life He gave.
He fulfilled salvation's plan,
So our sinful souls He could save."
