Longing After Thee

by Dave Mudford © 2024

As I consider my desires
the true longings of the heart,
I realise I confuse things
and start fishing in the dark.

My shallow expectations
try to announce that they are right,
swamping my deepest longings
so, they're no longer in my sight.

Time to enhance my vision
by exploring deep with my Lord,
searching with raw honesty
His word penetrates like a sword.

Surrendering all my passion
prepared to fall to my knee,
leaving behind the shadows
and start longing after Thee…

As the deer pants for the water,
so, my soul longs after You,
praising with adoration
worship; give Him what He's due.

Note: The phrase "surrendering all my passion" above does not mean losing it – more redirecting it to where God created it to be. Only then will we realise the ache in our hearts is caused by having God missing in our hearts (or completing/filling our hearts).

Psalm 42:1-2b As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
