One day, when the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus
Who was caught red-handed in the act of adultery -
He kneeled down, and wrote in the sand with His finger;
The Master didn't say a word, it was a mystery!
The poor, frightened woman was standing in the midst;
And her accusers already held a stone in their hand.
She had defiled the marriage bed, a most serious offense
Deserving of death, according to the Law of the land.
What happened next was unexpected, and quite unsettling:
With a few words, our Lord turned the situation around!
He challenged them to look deep inside their own hearts -
If just maybe a sinless man among them could be found.
"He who is without sin among you", thus spake Jesus;
"Let him step forward, and let him cast the first stone."
Ashamed and convicted, the men bowed their heads;
One by one they drew back, and left the woman alone.
Jesus showed God's mercy and grace to a guilty sinner;
He gave the woman a new chance at life, after her fall.
In like manner we Christians, who are forgiven so much -
Shouldn't we extend the same grace and forgiveness to all?
The sins of some men are obvious, and out in the open;
While other men's sins are more the secretive kind…
You may search high and low, but nowhere on this earth
A sinless, perfect human being you'll be able to find!
Without exception, everyone's a lifelong 'work in progress';
We all have limitations, weaknesses and shortcomings.
Every human heart is plagued by its own demons -
We all struggle with our own sinful desires and longings.
Sometimes it can be tempting to point an accusing finger;
To lash out in anger, or to cast that first stone…
Just remember then, how much you were forgiven,
And how every human heart is fighting battles of its own.
