More Than a Rhyme

by Dave Mudford © 2024

nursery rhymes all sounding nice
while dark abuse takes its price,
tears ignite a hidden shame
ugly lies are left to blame.

innocence lost to brutal plight
left all alone with none to fight,
the silence curse just screams and shouts
damaging souls, true love it routs.

their sparkling dims as diamonds thin
crushed by desire of selfish sin,
bruises disguised but left unhealed
love misplaced as disgrace is yelled.

bitter words harm and drown young lives
our eyes are turned as evil thrives,
compassion whispered in hush tones
pain deeper than their broken bones.

time for us all to open eyes
compelled to love when a child sighs,
prepared to act as Jesus guides
active with strength that He provides.

giving more than a nursery rhyme
lifting their worth from all the grime,
mourning tears that transforms our minds
so, each child a safe refuge finds.

beauty of grace we all receive
more of God's love we now perceive,
compassion's voice demands that we stand
beside each child as we take their hand.

Note: The main theme of this poem is the abuse/neglect of children - so often met with silence and indifference. We say we care but true compassion demands we do something about it not just turn our eyes and pretend all is well - as we listen and say sweet nursery rhymes (while the damage continues in the background, hidden but all too real). It is time to take their hand and support in ways that makes a difference!
