I Am a Pharisee

by Joseph Campanello © 2024

When our Lord saved me
From a life of misery and sin
He did not thereby grant me
The right to decide who is out
And who is in…

I remained a wretched sinner
I am one to this day:
Although the Lord remakes us
When we return in tears to him,
Our fallen nature doesn't go away…

I am a Pharisee:
Self-righteous, sanctimonious, and smug,
Harsh and judgmental to the core,
Subject to fits of selective amnesia,
Forgetful of my own sins, but never yours…

When our Lord died for us,
To take our sins upon Himself,
He did not thereby grant us
Carte blanche to judge our brother,
Putting humility on the shelf…

We are Pharisees:
Hypercritical, hypocritical, and heated:
By our holier-than-thou attitudes
Satan will never be defeated.
