Wording of this Handout:
If you could look underneath a forest what do you think you might see?
There are many huge forests in the world.
A forest is a bunch of trees, growing closely together.
The trouble is, forest trees have roots which spread out under the ground (just like their branches, which spread out into the sky).
In fact a trees roots can be the same size as its branches.
But in a forest there is just not enough room for all the trees to spread their roots that far. They are cramped together, like people in a crowded lift!
To solve this problem, God has created a fungus to help the trees.
The fungus grows around the tree roots and spreads itself into the soil, just like very fine roots.
The fungus helps the tree, and the tree makes oxygen for you and me to breath.
When God created this world, He made it so that living things helped each other. The fungus helps the tree, and the tree helps you and me.
