Wording of this Handout:

Covering our Motives

One day, suddenly, Mr."A" came to see Mr."B". Then Mr."A" took Mr."B" to town and paid for a very nice meal for him. And then Mr. "A" took Mr."B" home again, praising him for his garden, and for his "wonderful" children.

Just before Mr."A" went home again, he asked Mr."B" if he would fix his television, and Mr."B" said he would love to, and for no charge.

Now, when you think of this story, you might suspect that Mr."A" had a secret motive for being so friendly to Mr."B".

And Mr."B" might have guessed Mr."A's" motives, but once he was home again, with the food in his tummy and the praise in his ears, he was trapped into doing the TV repair work free of charge.

We may hide our secret motives better than Mr."A", but God can see them. God knows everything that goes on inside us, whether we are faking it, or being sincere. He also knows if we really love Him or not.

The Bible says, "I, the Lord, search the heart." Jeremiah 17:10 (New King James Version)
