WATCHING THE BAND

by Jeannine McMullen

I sit and watch the band go by
Unable to join or even try
But I can enjoy the music of the band
The hymns they play sound so grand

I wonder what goes through their thoughts
As they play the old hymns of the cross
Are they of their precious Saviour?
Or just the next note on the paper

When they play of saints marching in
Do they know they are cleansed from sin?
Are they wondering if they are getting a preview
Of marching home with the saints to live with You?

And what of the old rugged cross
Do they know You, who did not count the cost?
Who died on a hill far away
So they might live anew each day?

The Lily of the valley, do they know it is You?
Or is it just another flower in their garden that grew
So many old hymns that bring such joy to their hearts
Is that why they so joyfully play their parts?

Oh how I would love to join in the refrains
To lift joyful praises to You would be my gain
For though an instrument I do not play
There is music in my heart all the day

So I will sit and watch the band go by
Joining the music in my heart, lift it to the sky
Praising and thanking You my precious Lord
With my brothers and sisters, all in one accord
