A Pulpit Has A Purpose

by Margaret Cagle

Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit.
There he stood to proclaim God's Word.
The pulpit was made for that purpose.
From it, God's law was read and heard.

Preachers have stood behind pulpits
In churches over hundreds of years,
Preaching the powerful Gospel message.
Many have repented with bitter tears.

Modern churches have discarded pulpits
And toned down sermons quite a bit.
They preach behind a tiny little stand
Where their sermon notes will barely fit.

There's no more pounding on a pulpit
As they preach to that Sunday crowd.
The mention of sin may offend someone,
And they must not preach too loud.

They would like to build a mega church
By preaching what the world wants to hear.
They have tossed aside the hymn books.
They are too old fashioned, they fear.

They can throw out the pulpit and hymnals
And make changes that are modern and new,
But the Gospel message never changes.
Christ Jesus died for me and for you!
