Responding to the Word

As Ezra read aloud the Law,
The people bowed down on the floor.
They did not look around in a daze,
Or fall asleep in a cloudy haze.
You see, the Word was life to them,
And, in surrender, they said, "Amen!"
What is our manner when the Word is read?
A living sacrifice or the living dead?
