Life Is Not What it Seems

by Kathleen Higham

Life is not what it seems
But, had I suffered not
There would be no knowledge
Of this battle to be fought.

If life carried no burdens
Was always righteous and fair
Simplicity though often a comfort
In actuality is empty and bare.

Still there are those carefree
Who are oblivious to sorrow
Trouble does not seek them
As they dream into tomorrow.

The unexpected has not breeched
Nor crushed their worldly way
Believing they have earned the life
That warms each sunny day.

Oh Lord, hear my cry to You
For the heart that does not bleed
Not knowing the brutality of life
Or the blessing that comes with need.

Need may surely accompany pain
Though grief has avoided some
Even when life looks wonderful
Joy might not always come.

How can one know true joy?
If we live it in our dreams
Without God to guide the heart
Life is not what it seems.

Life is not what it seems
Until we touch the deep
Whether bruised, or not, our hearts
Our hearts are His to keep.

Yet life is not what it seems
Until the Holy Spirit helps us see
Not who we are, but who God is
Hearts scarred with His, now free.

If and when the heart shall bleed
Fear not, for it bears His scar
Life may not be what it seems
But only God knows who we are.

Acts 15:8 "So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us." (NKJV) The Word For Today Bible.
