DAVID

by edward potts

I'll tell you my story, when I was a lad,
I had to stay home and tend sheep for my dad,
My brothers went away to fight in a war,
We asked God's protection wherever they are.

My father called to me and said "David, go see,
How your brothers are doing, bring word back to me,"
So early next morning just at break of day,
With gifts for my brothers I went on my way.

While visiting my brothers I saw quite a sight,
A giant of a man whom no one would fight,
Saul's army panicked, they all ran away,
I asked one of them, "Who is this giant anyway?"

My brothers were furious when my question they heard,
"Go home little brother, watch over the herd",
Then someone told Saul and he sent for me,
"Is all Israel afraid of this giant that I see"?

"Well I'm not afraid of that giant out there,
I've protected my sheep from the lion and the bear,
I'll slay this giant for you, over Israel he'll not trod,
For I'll go fight him in the name of my God."

"The Lord of all Israel will be at my side,
In His strength and power my trust will abide,"
So Saul said softly, "Go to the battle along with your Lord."
And he gave me his armor along with his sword.

The armor was heavy and I was quite small,
I took them off quickly and returned them to Saul,
My staff and my sling is all that I took.
I picked five small stones from the edge of a brook.

As I crossed the valley, the giant drew near,
And I heard him shout, "A small boy you send here,
What's that you have, just a stick in your hand,
Am I some dog, couldn't they find a man"?

"I'll feed your flesh to animals and birds,"
Then he cursed God, those were his last words,
I shouted to him, "Come on with your spear,
With the Lord of heaven I've never known fear".

"The God that I serve is the God you defy,
And for the God of all Israel, today you will die,"
When I said these words, I hurled a stone at his head,
This mighty giant, Goliath was dead.

The God that I serve, so mighty is He,
His love is ever with us, so eternal and free,
Though I was a shepherd, with sling and a stone,
I knew that with God I was never alone.
