BETRAYAL

by edward potts

My life was empty, I could hear their jeers,
And down from my eyes poured millions of tears,
Memories flushed me as I heard Him say, Three times today, Peter, you will betray.

I looked and watched as they drove nails in His hands,
And I saw them as they weaved thorns into bands.
His cross rose up to point at the sky,
And I just stood there and watched Him die.

I returned to my nets where I fished in the sea,
I knew that the soldiers would be coming for me,
Betray, betray, betray, I could still hear Him say,
Before the cock crowed I betrayed Him that day.

My heart was heavy, my soul filled with dread,
My mind kept repeating those words He had said,
"I come to save mankind for heaven they lost,
Each man's debt I'll pay but my life is the cost."

Now He is gone, my life's full of fears,
Days are so different now that He is not here,
Then I heard Mary calling,"Peter, Peter, come see,
The tomb is empty, where could His body be."?

"What has happened, what has happened," I heard John say,
Then I entered the tomb where Jesus did lay,
Grave clothes were empty, the grave was bare,
The napkin was folded, but Jesus was not there.

I found all the others and we went to the room.
We discussed our future as we huddled in gloom
Fear came upon us, the tension was high,
A knock at the door, we got ready to die.

The door was opened, and I heard Mary say,
"He has risen, He has risen, I saw Him today,"
Oh, I remembered the words He had said,
"Though they kill this body, I'll return from the dead."

We stayed in that room and prayed all the night,
When suddenly the darkness was filled with the light,
It was Jesus who entered, the promise we knew.
He uttered the words, "My peace I give you."

I raised my eyes and looked in His face,
No condemnation was showing, nothing but grace,
My burden was lifted, my soul was set free,
My sins were forgiven, His blood covered me.
