Don’t Do It

by Gertrude Jefferies

He saw the garment lying there
A beautiful sight to behold.
And never in his life had he
Seen this much silver or gold.

He stared and as he stared, a thought
Began to take place in his mind.
Why not take this 'bounty' home with him
Stash them out of sight in the ground.

He thought about his instructions
And knew he should carry them out.
But greed had taken hold of him
No one must know what this is about.

He took the money and the cloth
It was easier said than done,
By now he'd forgotten what God said,
In his desire to grab some crumbs.

God was watching him closely
And he knew what Achan had done
And the anger of Almighty God
Was now felt by everyone.

For the tide was turned against them
The enemy put them to flight.
Back in their camp, they cried to God
To show them why they lost the fight.

God said, "there is sin among you
Deliberate, rebellious sin.
Unless it is sought out, and punished
I will not go with you again."

Achan, his family and possessions
Met judgement that very day,
And because of disobedience
Sin left an imprint to stay.

Be sure your sin will find you out
Is what this moral says
Live life the way God instructed
So sin won't have it's way.
