The cup

by Matt Gullett

“Ouch”, said the cup
As it spun on the wheel
“Shh”, said the potter,
“It's not a big deal.”

“Woe”, said the cup,
Desiring to sleep,
“Be still little one,
Time is not cheap.”

“Oww”, said the cup,
As the knife made a path,
The potter stayed quiet,
Was he filled up with wrath?

“Why?”, said the cup,
As the potter was still,
The potter stayed quiet,
No response, only chill.

“Please”, said the cup,
As the knife was removed,
“There”, said the potter,
“What a lovely groove.”

“Wow”, said the cup,
Admiring the mark,
“See”, said the potter,
My plan is not dark.

“A plan?”, said the cup
Desiring to know,
“Of course”, said the potter,
His eyes all aglow.

“What cup will I be?”
Was excitedly asked.
“Just wait and be patient,
My work is not fast.”

The cup remained silent,
But let out a gasp,
As the potter reached down,
And held it in his grasp.

“Good” said the potter,
“My work is all done.
My child, stand up,
Come bask in my Son.”

“In six days I made,
The heavens and earth,
But you are more precious,
Of much greater worth!”
