The Church Resides in Us

by Travis East

Going through the motions
Putting on a show
Look around and wonder
Are we ever going to grow?

Two or more are gathered
Are you really here?
Are you pleased with what you see
Or holding back the tears?

The stained glass tells the story
Of the price you have paid
Have we all forgotten
The sacrifice you made?

Lord, help us to remember
That you took our place
You brought us from the depths of Hell
And saved us with your grace

I can't imagine how it feels
To be betrayed by man
Or to watch us fall asleep
As we hear about your plan.

We are to be your body
To bring your name to all
Will our legs be strong enough
Are we victims of the Fall?

Lord, help us to remember
We are the shadow of your cross
That we don't just go to church
The church resides in us

You suffered Hell on earth for us
Asking nothing in return
Except to call upon your name
Whenever will we learn?

Each time we pass our neighbors by
Or ignore the hungry man
We drive the nail yet again
Into our savior's hand

We fill our lives with violence
And all kinds of sin
Knowing that it's wrong
Just trying to fit in

We invent new ways to pass the time
We cling onto our youth
All these things we do in vain
To hide us from the truth

You wrote Yourself into our lives
To show us where to look
Forgive us for our loss of faith
Before you close the book

Lord, help us to remember
We are the shadow of your cross
That we don't just go to church
The church resides in us

Our moral ground has shifted
Upon what platform do we stand?
Without the guidance of our Lord
The day of judgment is at hand

We wage battles with no meaning
Just to pick a fight
But if no truth is absolute
How do we know we're right?

Afraid to call the kettle black
Fearful to offend
Help us to remember
What will happen in the end

Like a loving parent
You made the boundaries clear
You warned us of the consequence
For anyone who'll hear.

You brought your light in human form
It brightens as it grows
Though some may say 'God is dead'
On the third day, He rose

Such a finite span of time
Why ever do we wait?
Tell all you know that Christ is Lord
Before it is too late

Lord, help us to remember
We are the shadow of your cross
That we don't just go to church
The church resides in us
