The Cupbearer King

by Bryan Miles

In a kingdom under heaven
There lived a noble King,
His throne, of righteous standing
Though turmoil, it would bring;
He followed the law of His Father
And traveled throughout the land,
Though not on a royal stallion
His feet would walk the sand;
He spoke with words of wisdom
To anyone, who would hear
But, many in the kingdom
Turned back a listening ear;
His robe was torn and tattered
His sandals, dirty and worn
Yet, He was still a royal King
Crowned, the day He was born;
He supped with the local fishermen
Sat down with the common man,
Wayward men, in need of a friend
Were part of His caravan;
His palace wasn't made of stone
Though heaven was His court,
One day it all came crashing down;
And seemed to be falling short!

The soldiers of an earthly king
Fashioned Him a cross,
They fed Him wine and vinegar
His robes, a gambler's toss;
They placed on Him, a crown of thorns
And pushed it through His head
They spit at Him, and mocked His name
His royal reign was dead;
But wait, He had a Cup bearer
Who knew of His poison drink!
Though the grapes were foul and bitter
And gave off, a venomous stink;
His Cup bearer was loyal
A very trusted advisor,
He was destined to sip,
and what touched His lip;
Would make man, all the wiser!

Why would He let Him take a sip?
Why would He let Him drink?
Wasn't that, His royal duty?
My friend, sit back and think!
The Father of the universe
The grower of the vine,
The keeper of the grape
The keeper of the wine;
Knew, though the cup was bitter
He would have to sip its juices
Now all the darkest demons
Are hanging by their nooses;
They're hanging by their nooses
And swinging by the rope,
That sought to crash a Kingdom;
That held a wider scope!

The honor of the Cup bearer
Never lost its place,
His subjects became you and me
As He looked upon our face;
He protected all His chosen Sheep
By drinking the chosen cup,
The King became the Cup bearer!
So, raise your glasses; up...
