-Taken Too Soon-

by Bryan Miles

Floppy, blonde hair
BIG eyes of blue,
Always following,
after you;
Tugging on your shirt
Calling your name,
"Hey dad,
want to play a game?"
Ascending a tree
Swinging from a branch,
Moments like this;
Your heart takes a chance!

Your heart takes a chance
And savors the time,
Father and son
Together, you climb;
You climb towards the sky
Almost to the clouds,
Imagination's stairway
Far away from the crowds;
One cloud's a dinosaur
The other, a bear
The Father above
sees you there;
He sees you both there
And it blesses His heart,
But, often things end;
Not so much, like they start!

You try to shut out
That particular day,
When life turned around
And bad news came your way;
That floppy, blonde hair
Would begin to fall out;
You would shake both your fists!
You would scream and shout!
But, nothing would change
There was nothing you could do;
Those beautiful blue eyes,
Staring back at you!

You would hold tight his hand,
And lovingly smile;
"Let's go back and climb,
in the tree for a while!"
Then, together you'd climb
To the top of the tree;
Time on your own
That the Father could see;
You sat by his bedside
And read him God's word,
Something took hold
You knew he had heard;
It took hold in him
And also in you,
Precious time together;
That none could un-do!

And then, came the day
You dreaded the most,
Though you never left his side
You never left your post;
A post that was given
To you, by fate
Taken too soon;
You remember the date!

You remember the date
And it tears at your heart,
Only his death
Could keep you apart;
Engraved on his gravestone
Is an etching of a toy,
And a picture of a floppy-haired
Blue eyed boy;
On the streets of the New Jerusalem
He runs his train,
No more crying!
No more pain!
In harmony with heaven
He beats his little drum,
Knowing one day
His dad will come;

His dad will come
And they'll both climb a tree,
Time spent together;
That the Father will see...
