Symbols of Love

by Janet Martin

We choose a picture, some chocolate, a rose
Candle-light dinner, wine perhaps, or new clothes
Tangible symbols to declare love so true
Gifts from the heart to say, 'I love you'

He chose a crown made of thorns, not the rose
Some nails and a cross are the symbols He chose
Blood-stained timber on a dark hill-side
Crying, "Father, forgive them," He loved as He died
