Gary's Orchids

by Margaret Cagle

Gary was a tall teenager,
But he had the mind of a child.
He loved everyone in his church
In a manner so meek and mild.

Gary took up an interesting hobby.
He learned to grow orchids well.
He gave many orchids to others,
And to the florist, some he'd sell.

He brought orchids to his church.
He gave them to girls and ladies too.
He would gave an orchid and say,
"Jesus loves me, and He loves you."

One Sunday Gary dropped his orchids
As he was walking across the street.
When he stopped to pick them up,
A car knocked him right off his feet.

Sadly, Gary was fatally injured,
And he went up to heaven that day.
He was sorely missed at church,
Much more than words could say.

The teenagers in Gary's church
Tried to think of something to do
To honor the memory of Gary,
So they learned to grow orchids too.

They gave orchids away at church
And put orchids on Gary's grave too,
Along with a plaque which read,
"Jesus loves me, and he loves you."
