-The Further the Father- (The Closer to God)

by Bryan Miles

You were right beside me on the day I was born
When the water burst and the womb's wall was torn
I entered the world and You were right there
My dad didn't want me, my mother in prayer
You were there when I cried, when I learned how to walk
My first word was "Dada," when I started to talk
You were there on the lawn when I threw my first ball
But I didn't see you, so I just let it fall
By myself I went fishing with my feet in the stream
I would close both my eyes and bask in my dream
I would bring an extra sandwich in case you came by
Never knowing that my Father heard every cry

You walked with me daily, though I didn't know
Adjusting my clothing as I started to grow
You were there when I fell, You bandaged my knee
You opened my eyes, only then could I see!
You were always there to hold me at the end of the day
Never letting one obstacle get in the way
Or stop You from loving me, no matter what I did!
You were my Father, and I was Your kid!
My earthly father left slamming the door!
And I was left wondering, what fathers are for?

You stretched out Your arms and pulled me aside
Holding on to me tightly with Fatherly pride
They nailed both Your hands to the wood of a cross
The hope of my future depended on loss
The loss of Your life, the loss of Your blood
Every pound, every whack! Every echoing THUD!
Yes, You were right there, every step of the way!
There's a record of my birth right down to the day
You stretched out Your arms the day I was born
You still stretch them out, though I'm tired and worn!

To all of the blessed who have a great dad
And to those who have lost him who are broken and sad
Hold on to the memory, or hold on to his shirt
A father's love doesn't end covered over with dirt
Take a stroll by the lake, hold on to your pole
Your Father's right with you fishing for your soul
Your Father's right with you when you stumble and fall
He's right there to catch every wandering ball
If I could send a message, I'd deliver with a SHOUT!
My Father in Heaven, that's what fathers are about.....

Happy Father's Day
