In Shadow Of The Cross

by Gary L S West

Dark thoughts, evil deeds, black creases on the soul
Dark chant, evil spell, black in part? Nay, but whole
Heresy, sweet to taste, like honey on the tongue
Damning hunger, slaying old, feeding on the young

A devil, a daemon, a spirit that is fell
A black wraith, a phantom, an evil known too well
Oh, dark day, ebony night, bear witness Hell's great throng
Lucifer, angel cursed, brings wails to usurp song

A pause, a break, a ceasing of all things
Eyes look, ears hear, all hail the King of Kings
Light press on, dark recoil, a silence heavy falls
Light advance, dark meets threat, a war rings in the halls

King meets Prince, battle rage, the two meet stroke for stroke
Three days' time, fight long last, on third day morning broke
King arise, Prince lay torn, Messiah conquers death
Hope reborn, saints are freed, releasing long held breath

Spear-torn side, nail-scarred hand, suffering on Him placed
Thorn-pierced brow, whip-thrashed back, our sins washed clean by grace
Body scarred, forgiving eyes, love almost unbelieved
Here He stands, the Father's Son, who gave us this reprieve

Son of Man, Son of God, our Brother call we thee
Waiting now, coming soon, the day when we shall see
Heaven home, kingdom come, the glory long foretold
Learning we, Scriptures wrote, the promise made of old
