Misplaced Birthday

by Patricia Joan Polhans

I wonder how you would feel
If others changed your birthday
Into red suits 'n' fat ole men,
Even gave your name away!

How would you feel if others
Took all your Christmas joys
And celebrated your birthday
As a holiday of gifts and toys?

And what if you were only
Allowed upon the sidelines
As others opened your gifts
Knowing none of them were thine?

Wouldn't you feel discouraged,
Maybe angry or even resent
The fact that you weren't given
One single acknowledgment?

And wouldn't you be upset,
Disappointment at their gall
And maybe even feel cheated
As others had a gay ole ball?

"All my gifts you have stolen
Tears are welling up in my eyes
For I'd given you my very best gift
And my birthday taken by surprise!

"Surely you must have many gifts
To lay at my precious feet
So that this Christmas day
My birthday would be complete!

While searching thru your gifts
Could you possibly find
My one misplaced birthday
And return it for it is mine?"
