Winter's Lament; Spring's Descent

by Patricia Joan Polhans

Thank you, Lord for the soft, gentle breeze
That whispers through the barren trees.
The leaves have changed, fallen to the ground
Thank you, God for their wonderful sound.

Barren branches perched and seem at rest.
Birds flying south leaving home and nest.
All are attentive to the glistening white snow
Beginning its fall upon the earth below.

The colors of fall lie upon the parched land,
Red, yellow, gold, orange and tan.
Severed branch from whence they became
Detached and helpless, crinkled and stained.

As I stroll slowly along I hear the crunch
Of crackling leaves left huddled in a bunch.
The robins have left; the bird's song is gone
As colors float upon the leaf strewn ponds.

Barren trees thankful as they're covered in glory
A white blanket of snow engulfs them thoroughly.
Even trees seem to find a time for perfect rest
In winter's arms, snuggled, covered and blessed.

In only a moment spring disturbs their sleep
As squirrels climb down from their winter retreat.
Birds singing a tune in the old elm trees
And fragrant new flowers bend their knees.

Awaken, my children, awaken with glee.
Spread your wings and sing your songs to me.
Sparrows, robins, eagles and doves,
And birds of wonder, sing songs of love.

Suddenly, trees wakened by spring's descent.
Young saplings crying an awak'ning lament.
Calling to God for the soft spring rain.
To bath and wash those from winter's cold stain.
