A Man of sorrows

by Bettina Van Vaerenbergh

Acquainted with grief, a Man of sorrows -
He was despised; the Son of God.
We hid as it were our faces from Him;
Our dear Savior, we esteemed Him not.

Surely Jesus carried our sicknesses,
He took upon Himself all our pain,
And yet we did consider Him stricken -
Smitten of God; afflicted and slain.

For our transgressions He was wounded;
He was bruised for our iniquities -
With His stripes, we are healed; upon Him
Was the chastisement of our peace.

All of us have done as wayward sheep -
Yes, all of us have gone astray…
Yes, all together we have sinned -
Every man has turned to his own way.

Jesus was oppressed and greatly afflicted,
And yet He opened not His mouth.
Dumb as a sheep before her shearers;
As a lamb to the slaughter He was brought.

It pleased the Lord to put Him to grief,
To lay our transgressions on Him -
He was cut off out of the land of the living;
God made His soul an offering for sin.

Though Jesus never did any violence or evil,
Or spoke deceitfully while He had breath;
He was numbered with the transgressors;
He poured out His soul for us unto death.

Jesus suffered for the sins of the world -
High on a cross, for all men to see…
How His body was broken, a ransom for all;
His precious blood shed for you and for me.
