"Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—
went to the chief priests and asked,
"What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?"
So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.
From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over."
(Matthew 26:14-16, NIV)
A man named Judas Iscariot,
a disciple of Jesus Christ,
decided to go to the chief priests
to betray the Lord at a price.
"Just what are you willing to pay me
if I turn Christ over to you?"
The chief priests agreed to pay Judas
for the crime he said he would do.
Thirty coins of silver were payment
to deliver the Chosen Son
for a crime He never committed—
Christ Jesus, the innocent One.
It was then . . .
Judas watched for an opportune time
he could turn Christ over to them.
'Twas after His very Last Supper
that Christ Jesus would be condemned.
"Then Jesus told them,
'This very night you will all fall away
on account of me, for it is written:
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'"
(Matthew 26:31, NIV)
The good Lord will then strike the Shepherd
and you'll come to desert me this night—
you'll all fall away—you will scatter—
in the dark of the night you'll take flight.
