The Ten Commandments

by Kristine Stanton © 2023

We have five fingers on each hand—
all adding up to ten—
every finger, a reminder
of rules from God's command.

These rules were written one-by-one
on tablets made of stone.
They serve as guides for which to live—
a guide for everyone.

"The LORD said to Moses, 'Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction," (Exodus 24:12, NIV).

O' love the Lord with all your heart—
believe in only Him,
and never serve another god—
in false gods don't take part.

Love all your neighbors as yourself—
be kind and care for them.
The Lord wants you to hold no grudge
toward others or oneself.

God's name should n'er be used in vain—
keep holy the Lord's Day.
Come honor parents, one and all
and praise God's holy name.

You're not to be false witnesses
or steal from anyone.
Don't violate your marriages
by sins you should suppress.

The good Lord says don't covet
another neighbor's wife.
Stand strong, be bold, and do not kill—
come to rise above it.
