The Scent of True Love

by Dave Mudford © 2024

What does true love smell like?
scented rose of pure delight?
or maybe the sweat of brow
people wrestling through their fight.

What is the scent of the church in action?
is it one filled with sweet perfume
or the stench of the homeless plight?
the smelly feet of broken
finding safe refuge in the night,
love not just in the spoken
but filling darkness with His light.

What is the flavor of real grace?
one that is easy on the taste
and determined not to lose face?
more someone not concerned with haste
but with another's fate,
prepared to go the extra mile
willing to be a mate,
walking beside them through their trial
appetites salted with our tears
a meal of richness that one shares.

What does compassion look like?
can it be captured in mere words
or is it seen in living verbs?
an arm around a shoulder
where love becomes quite bolder;
love begins to stretch
broken hearts to reach,
its taking love to the edge
making Christ our only pledge.

What is the sound of worship?
a melody dressed in pretty verse
or the sound of our bended knee?
something we feel that we must rehearse
Or the sound of flesh, being nailed to the tree?

What does true love smell like?
the answer might surprise you
if you take a deep breath, with our Christ around!
