The Wounded Man

by Dave Mudford © 2023

scared to show his emotion
he's hiding behind his task,
covering weakness's glance
drinking whiskey from a flask.

pretending to courage dance
though he doesn't know the steps,
afraid that he looks foolish
lost; he does a few more reps.

dreaming of satisfaction
grazing on empty meaning,
while wearing a grown man's clothes
a little boy is drowning.

tears cried only deep in heart
where they saturate his hope,
healing rotting in his resolve
drugs; the way he tries to cope.

suffering silently alone
wondering what others think,
image projection management
as his faith begins to shrink.

the greatest man ever, Jesus wept
His strength discovered as He loved,
mates encouraged through His sharing
inspiring us; He shed his blood.

bleeding hope into our wounds
teaching us how to be a man,
confiding truth into our dreams
time to embrace what He began!

sharing the struggle with our friends
real honesty should be desired,
leaving our failures in His grace
our surrender; all that's required.

Philippians 1:6 ESV And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
